Getting Around Geraldton

The City encourages people to be active and use more sustainable transport when getting around Geraldton by walking, cycling, scooting, skating, skateboarding and taking public transport. We also have a strategy to guide investment into transport infrastructure that helps us become a more walking and cycling friendly city.

Shared paths

The City is dedicated to creating a safe, efficient, and inclusive pathway network that supports all members of our community—whether you're walking, cycling, or using mobility aids. As part of a broader integrated transport system, our goal is to make active travel accessible and enjoyable for everyone.

We work closely with WA Government agencies to champion the environmental, health, and economic benefits of walking and cycling. Our strategic approach also guides the development of a cycling network that prioritises safety, direct routes, and user comfort.

    What is sustainable transport?

Designing neighbourhoods that make it easy and appealing to walk, cycle, skate, or catch public transport is a powerful way to support community health and wellbeing. These forms of sustainable transport not only reduce our environmental impact—they also help people stay active as part of their daily routines.

Whether it’s a quick trip to the shops, a visit to the local park, or catching up with friends nearby, choosing active travel for short journeys is a simple and effective way to build healthy habits into everyday life.

    What are the benefits?

Regional communities are increasingly facing challenges like rising traffic volumes, congestion, noise pollution, and growing demand for parking—all while striving to maintain access to essential services and facilities. While some traffic originates from outside the area, nearly half of all trips are local and under five kilometres. Encouraging residents to choose sustainable transport options can have an immediate impact on easing these pressures.

    Benefits of sustainable transport include:

    • Safer communities – More people walking and cycling increases awareness among road users, strengthens neighbourhood connections, and enhances passive surveillance.
    • Support for local businesses – Active travelers are more likely to shop locally, boosting the local economy.
    • Better health outcomes – Regular physical activity helps prevent chronic illnesses and supports mental wellbeing and social connection.
    • Inclusive access – Walking and cycling are low-cost, accessible options for people of all ages and abilities.
    • Environmental improvements – Fewer car trips mean lower greenhouse gas emissions and reduced noise and air pollution.
    • Less congestion – Sustainable travel helps reduce traffic on local roads.
    • Cost savings – Investing in active transport infrastructure is more affordable than maintaining extensive road networks for vehicles.
